Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is warning users to be cautious of romance scams ahead of Valentine’s Day. Scammers often pose as attractive, successful individuals with fake backgrounds and use stolen or AI-generated photos to build trust with their targets. Meta recently collaborated with research firm Graphika to take down romance scams impersonating military officers, celebrities, and fake match-making agencies targeting people in Africa. To combat these scams, Meta is testing tools like facial recognition technology and advises users to be suspicious of messages from strangers and verify identities before engaging or sending money.
