Tyla, a South African singer, has reiterated her stance on her racial identity in a recent interview with British Vogue, asserting that she identifies as both a Black and Coloured woman.
The controversy surrounding her identity resurfaced after a TikTok video in 2020, where she described herself as a “Coloured South African.”

While the term “Coloured” is recognized in South Africa, it holds different connotations abroad, particularly in the U.S.
Tyla has clarified that she embraces her diverse heritage, including Black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian, and Coloured ancestry, and is comfortable being identified as both Coloured in South Africa and Black elsewhere.
Despite ongoing debates, she remains steadfast in her self-awareness and unbothered by those who choose not to understand.
